The section of Westward Beach Road leading to Point Dume continues to crumble and erode, months after the road originally got shut down by Malibu City officials.
On Monday, a new section of the road closed between the Birdview Avenue cul-de-sac and the west corner of The Sunset Restaurant. As a safety precaution, Water District 29 has shut off water service, temporarily affecting The Sunset Restaurant.
According to the L.A. County Sheriff, erosion from surf and wind exposed the L.A. County water main after washing away pieces of asphalt. Right now, an L.A. contractor is using local material and tools to prevent further road damage and erosion, according to the City of Malibu. A couple of yards away from the new road damage are the ongoing emergency repairs for the Westward Beach Road.
This pattern of damage and erosion is due to high surf conditions with the ongoing El Niño season, which has been more intense than in the past due to the overlap with a surge of warm water called a Kelvin wave. High surf is also being caused by a series of recent hurricanes in the Eastern Pacific related to the El Niño effects.
Roads aren’t the only infrastructure taking damage, as at least 13 residences in Long Beach have been flagged as unsafe to enter by Long Beach City officials after waves crashed against the boardwalk, ripping it apart and severely damaging homes along the peninsula earlier this month.
